04/11 FW Nature Center: Day 6

We got to enjoy the beautiful weather and experience a hike on the Oak Motte trail out at the Fort Worth Nature Center yesterday. My favorite part was seeing the blue bonnets in full bloom. When I came to Texas for college I always heard people comment on how stunning these flowers were, but I had yet to experience them for myself. They are so unique!
My group chose to go over to the lookout deck for yesterday's hike. We were unsuccessful in our mission to spot the bison, but we did see all the prairie dogs that were moved to the area. They had the cages set up over pre-dug holes like the Nature Center experts had told us about at the beginning of the semester. We set out on the Oak Motte trail and enjoyed the lush greenery—I feel like it popped up all of a sudden while we were gone over spring break! It really is looking beautiful out at the Nature Center.
On our first hike a few weeks ago, Dr. Williams quoted someone saying, "Of all the walks you take in life, make sure a few are on dirt." I loved this quote because it was such a good reminder of the importance of enjoying the nature we have all around us. This class has instilled an appreciation for that in me, and I look forward to carrying that with me in the future.

  1. Thanks, Kate, you just gave me a big smile. That quote is from John Muir, one of our greatest environmental activists and writers. He is known as "the father of national parks" and is primarily the person responsible for creating Yosemite and Sequoia national parks. There are two long hiking trails named after him, and I had the privilege of hiking sections on both. Glad you enjoyable trips to the Fort Worth Nature Center.
